Disturbing advertisement of oil interests
in the movie "War of the Worlds"

EVguide got a copy of this mail
from Thomas Henden ( t_henden@hotmail.com ) to Paramount.

Product placement in 'War of the Worlds'

Tonight, some friends and I was attending the premiére of
"War of the Worlds".

As a huge fan of science fiction I was simply straight out surprised and
disappointed that your movie was sponsored by oil interests, as
we very clearly noticed comments about a "safe" SUV in the beginning
of the movie, and the "Ford" trade mark exposed many more times later.

Also some food was stuffed in a "Penzoil" box, also clearly visible in the
movie.

It's very obvious from the viewer's perspective that you had clear
intentions to advertise the Ford Motor company, SUVs and Penzoil
in "War of the Worlds".

Somehow I feel pretty sure that this advertisement of oil interests
wasn't neither the intention of HG Wells, or Orson Wells who adapted
the play for radio.

For the environmentaly conscious science fiction fan, who believe that
cleaner ways of transportation and green (solar) energy is a big part
of the future, this oil product placement really is disturbing.

I will not recommend "War of the Worlds" to my friends as it was not
true to the original piece with its irrelevant product placements and
association to USA's political agenda with war against terrorists (really
for oil) these days.

As a very frequent moviegoer, neither will I recommend other movies by your
and/or other companies, which are sponsored by 'unethical' companies, or
when the product placement gets disturbing and/or irrelevant.

If we continue to pollute our own planet we will need no alien enemy or
asteroid impact to get ourselves extinct from the planet's surface,
eventually!

Sincerely Thomas Henden, Oslo, Norway

(A happy owner of a (hydro)electric Think City car though Ford actually
bought the factory and stopped the production of my electric car)
